Overturned Truck (Hazmat Incident): I-99 (Rt. 26)
July 10, 2008
|
At approximately 12:45 hours, Company 8, Ambulance 8, Engine 212, and Engine-Rescue 914 were dispatched to mile marker 81 of I-99 (Route 26) for an overturned tractor-trailer. Medic 2449 was in the area and reported that the overturned vehicle was a tanker-truck with placard # 2924 (flammable corrosive liquid). Upon this report, Penn State Hazmat units were also dispatched.
Crews from Company 8 closed the highway and provided assistance to Company 20 Hazmat Teams, who determined that the tanker had a slight leak in both the trailer and the fuel tanks. Eagle Tire and Towing arrived on scene to assist with the incident and cleanup.
Company 8, Co 20, and Eagle Tire and Towing remained on scene for several hours until another tank arrived to received the fluid from the overturned tanker. Because of the senstive nature of the call and the slow process necessary to safely offload the leaking chemicals, crews operated on scene for approximately 13 hours.
Company 8 would like to extend a special thanks to Centre Hall Fire Company and the crew of Engine-Rescue 414 for their standby service during this incident.
