Building Fire: East College Ave, Pleasant Gap

At approximately 1712 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to a fire in a commercial building on East College Ave. Along with Company 8, an engine from Company 1 (Logan) and a truck from Company 2 (Undine) were also dispatched. Assistant Chief B. Shade asked for an additional engine from Company 16 (Walker Township). Assistant Chief R. Breon arrived on scene to find a heavy smoke condition in the building. Crews advanced two hand lines, located the seat of the fire and checked for extension. A small fire was found in an office area and was quickly knocked down. Due to the size of the building extensive ventilation was needed. Units operated on scene for approximately two hours.

Mutual Aid: Standby at the Alpha Fire Dept. Keeps Crews Busy

Members of the Pleasant Gap and Boalsburg Fire Departments lent a hand to the Alpha Fire Department during the Ohio State-Penn State football game. The evening began with a 2nd alarm building fire. Crews from Rescue 518, Engine 512, and Truck 516 found and extinguished the fire shortly after arriving on scene.The fire is currently under investigation.
Later that night, after the game had ended and crews were headed back to the station, they were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment on Waddle Road. Crews went to work to rapidly extricate the victims from the vehicle and assist with first aid.
Mutual Aid: Trailer Fire, Centre Hall

At approximately 02:55 hours, Company 8 (Tanker 819 and Engine 810) was dispatched to assist with a trailer fire in the Blackhawk Trailer Court in Centre Hall. Crews remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes.

At approximately 22:00 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to assist with a second alarm assignment for a house fire in Ferguson Township. Engine-Rescue 814 responded with a full crew. 814's crew operated on scene for approximately 1 hour, then was transferred to the Alpha Fire Department Main Station on Atherton Street for a standby assignment. 814 and crew remained on standby for an additional 2 hours.

Mutual Aid: Building Fire, N. Pennsylvania Ave, Centre Hall 26-September-2007
At approximately 1:45 hours, Engine 810 and Tanker 819 were dispatched to assist with a building fire on North Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall. Ambulance 852 was also dispatched in place of Ambulance 28 for the fire standby. Members from 810 worked interior on the second floor to check for extension, and also placed ground ladders on the A and D sides of the structure. Tanker 819 was staged, but not used during the incident. Crews operated on scene for approximately 3 hours.

Hazardous Conditions: 900 Block South Main Street

At approximately 15:37 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 900 block of South Main Street for hazardous conditions. Engine-Rescue 814 arrived on scene to find that a small pick-up had collided with a utility pole and was leaking fluids. Crews from Engine-Rescue 814 and Rescue 818 controlled the fluids and directed traffic flow until the vehicle was removed from the roadway. Units operated on scene for approximately 45 minutes.

Vehicle Fire: 200 Block Weaver Hill Road

At approximately 14:20 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 200 block of Weaver Hill Road for a working vehicle fire. Engine-Rescue 814 arrived on scene to find a pickup truck with heavy fire in the engine compartment. The truck was parked in a driveway. Fortunately, it was far enough from surrounding structures that they were not involved. Crews from 814 rapidly extinguished the flames. Engine 810 arrived on scene to back up the water supply for 814. Units operated on scene for approximately 30 minutes.

Mutual Aid: Gas Leak on Allen Street, State College

At approximately 11:16 hours, Engine 512, Engine-Rescue 814 and Rescue 818 were dispatched to the 500 block of Allen Street in State College for a gas leak outside. Engine-Rescue 814 arrived on scene, with Rescue 818 shortly behind to find a ruptured gas line. Columbia Gas was on scene and had the line crimped off. Crews confirmed that there were not harmful levels of gas in the area, and the box was placed available. Units operated on scene for approximately 30 minutes.

Mutual Aid: Kitchen Fire on Snydertown Road in Walker Twp.

At approximately 11:50 hours, Rescue 818 was dispatched to the 1300 block of Snydertown Road in Walker Twp. to assist with a kitchen fire. Upon the Rescue's arrival, the fire had been knocked down, but crews still needed to check for extension and perform overhaul. Rescue 818's crew operated on scene for approximately 90 minutes.

MVA: Axemann Road (Route 144)

At 06:53 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 1000 block of Axemann Road for a vehicle accident with injuries. Chief 800 arrived on-scene to find a head-on accident (car vs. truck) with one injury.
The patient was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center by Ambulance 852 while crews from Engine-Rescue 814 and Rescue 818 controlled fluids from the vehicles involved. Crews worked on scene for approximately one hour.

At approximately 13:00 hours, Brush 825 and Tanker 819 were dispatched to Brush Valley Road for a large field fire. Tanker 819 was used for water supply while Brush 825 assisted with extinguishing the fire. Crews operated on scene for approximately one hour.

At approximately 00:57 hours, Engine 810 was dispatched to assist with a shed fire on Portico Way in Bellefonte. Bellefonte's crews extinguished the fire quickly, and Engine 810 was cancelled en route.

Transfer Assignment to Station 9

At approximately 18:30 hours, Engine-Rescue 814 was given a transfer assignment to Station 9 (Milesburg) to provide protection while Company 9 handled a glider crash. Due to the glider being caught in a tree and requiring an extensive extrication process, Company 8 stood by at Station 9 for approximately 5 hours.

Standby Assignment for Bellefonte Fireworks and Parade

On the 5th of July, Engine-Rescue 814 and Brush 825 were on standby for the Bellefonte Fire Company carnival fireworks display. Rescue 818 was on standby two days later for the Bellefonte Fire Company parade. Fortunately, the service of Company 8's apparatus and staff were not needed.
Standby Assignment in Centre Hall

On Saturday, June 9, Engine-Rescue 814 participated in the Centre Hall Fire Company's Annual Parade and Carnival. 814 was awarded the best appearing Engine Rescue.
After the parade, while at the carnival grounds for the standby assignment, 814 responded to a dwelling fire in Boalsburg at 17:39 hours. 814 remained on scene for a short time before reporting back to the carnival grounds to continue the standby assignment. The evening ended with 814's crew reporting to the hot-zone of the fireworks display to ensure the scene remained safe throughout the performance.
Severe Thunderstorm Keeps Company 8 Busy

During the evening of Friday, June 8th, Company 8 responded to multiple weather-related incidents throughout Centre County. At approximately 20:04 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to a wires down incident on GE-Mar Ave. Immediately following at 20:05 hours, Tanker 819 was dispatched to a mutual aid structure fire at Home Delivery Pizza in Bellefonte. Shortly thereafter, numerous fire-police calls were dispatched for wires and trees down. Next, a transformer fire summoned Company 8 to Irish Hollow Road in Spring Township. The night ended with a mutual aid dwelling fire on Jacksonville Road in Howard. Rescue 818 and Ambulance 852 responded to the scene of the dwelling fire, while Engine-Rescue 814 reported to Station 16 for a transfer assignment. Crews remained working at various scenes for a total of approximately 3.5 hours.

Mutual Aid, Clinton County: Barn Fire

At approximately 15:33 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to a mutual aid barn fire in Clinton County. 810 and 819 responded to the scene. Shortly after they arrived on scene, 810 was transferred to the Nittany Valley Fire Station for a standby assignment. 819 operated on scene and assisted with water supply operations.

Belt Fire: Graymont Plant
03-June-2007; 08:35 hours
At approximately 08:35 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to Graymont for a conveyor belt fire. Crews arrived on scene to find an overheated belt, and worked to extinguish the fire. Company 8 operated on scene for approximately 3 hours.
At approximately 14:14 hours, Company 8 and Engine-Rescue 114 were dispatched to Interstate 99 N at mile marker 83 for a truck rollover with possible fire. 814 arrived on scene to find one truck on its side leaking fluids. Company 8 operated on scene, controlling fluids and directing traffic for approximately 30 minutes.

Fatal MVA: Nittany Valley Drive, Walker Twp.
22-May-2007; 10:10 hours
Fatal accident involving tractor trailer hauling tombstones and passenger car.
At approximately 10:10 hours, Walker Twp Fire Co. was dispatched to the 2300 block of Nittany Valley Dr. for an auto accident with entrapment and fire. Shortly after dispatch Captain 1693 arrived on scene and advised he had a tractor trailer on top of a passenger car with entrapment and fire in the passenger car. Engine-Rescue 1614 arrived on scene and requested next due Tanker and Rescue Squad. Due to Rescue 1418 being out of service, Rescue 818 was dispatched on the box. Upon 818's arrival, crews from Walker Twp. had extinguished the fire in the passenger car and used cribbing to stabilize the tractor trailer. At this time command had requested a heavy wrecker to lift the tractor trailer off the car to gain access. Once the wrecker was in place and lifted the truck, a winch from 818 was used to move the car from underneath the tractor trailer. After EMS confirmed the victim was deceased and Pennsylvania State Police and the coroner completed their investigation, the Rescue crew removed the roof and driver door of the car to remove the victim. Rescue 818 cleared at approx 12:15 hours.

Brush Fire: Weaver Hill Road
4-May-2007, 10:11 Hours
At approximately 10:11 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to a brush fire at the intersection of Weaver Hill Road and Feidler Road. Crews determined the incident to be a controlled burn at a residence and returned to quarters.
At approximately 20:32 hours, Company 8, a truck from Bellefonte and engine from the Alphas were dispatched to S.C.I. Rockview for a kitchen fire. All units reported to staging with the exception of 810 and 818. Crews from these units gained entry to find a smoke condition and minor fire confined to an oven. The fire was extinguished by the engine crew and the rescue's crew set up ventilation. Crews operated on scene for about 2 hours.

Automatic Fire Alarm: 550 West College Ave.
2-May-2007, 13:45 hours
At approximately 13:45 hours, Crews form company 8 responded to the automatic fire alarm at Health South. The cause for the alarm was a faulty electric heater.

At approximately 15:28 hours, Engine 810 was dispatched to assist Centre Hall Fire Department with a dwelling fire. Ambulance 852 was dispatched for the fire standby. Upon arrival, Pleasant Gap's crew was sent to staging and the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. The crew was told to move to the basement and assist with overhaul operations. Engine 810 operated on scene for about 1 hour.

20-April-2007, 17:45 hours
At approximately 17:45 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to a vehicle accident with injuries. Engine-Rescue 814 responded to the scene to find five vehicles with minor damage off the roadway. All injuries were minor, however Ambulance 852 transported one patient to Mount Nittany Medical Center. Crews operated on scene for one half hour.
At approximately 12:30 hours, Engine 810 and Brush 825 were dispatched to the 1700 block of Barnes Lane for a dwelling fire. While Company 8 was en route to the scene, Bellefonte's crews had arrived to find only a brush fire and placed Company 8 available.

Standby at Station 5 gets MVA with Rollover: Buffalo Run Road, Patton Twp.
15-April-2007, 01:22 hours
At approximately 01:22 hours, while on standby at Station 5, Companies 2, 3, 8, and 12 were dispatched to an accident with rollover and injuries. While en route, the county notified crews that police were on scene with confirmed entrapment. Upon arrival, crews prepared to extricate the patient, and found that the he was able to exit the vehicle on his own. Crews operated on scene for approximately one hour.
At approximately 18:29 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to assist Companies 1&2 with a 2nd alarm structure fire at the Bellefonte Victorian Manor on Linn Street in Bellefonte. Ambulance 852 was placed on standby for Bellefonte EMS. Rescue 818 responded to the scene to provide additional manpower. Shortly after 818's crew reported to the staging area, they were sent to the 1st floor to relieve Company 5's crews. Crews extinguished fire and checked for extension; then all crews were pulled due to the large amount of water inside the structure. Command instructed all crews to take a defensive attack on the fire. 818's crew was placed available shortly thereafter due to sufficient manpower on scene.

MVA: 2-April-2007; 17:01 hours
At approximately 17:01 hours, Company 8 and Ambulance 8 were dispatchted to a vehicle accident in the area of SCI rockview. Upon arriving on scene, 818's crew found a UPS truck had rolled over to its side and was resting on the hood of another car. Ambulance 851's crew had already packaged the patient. After the scene was controlled, 818 went available. The UPS truck was righted and 814 remained on scene for fluid and hazard control, and to asssist fire police with traffic control. Crews operated on scene for about one hour.

Wires Down: 26-March-07; 15:35 hours
At approximately 15:35 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to Route 144 in the area of Happy Valley Blend for wires down. Crews were on standby for approximately one and one-half hours until Allegheny Power crews arrived on scene. Power was restored at approximately 20:45 hours.

Inside Fire Investigation: 23-March-07; 14:14 hours
At approximately 14:14 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to an inside investigation on South Harrison Road. Engine-Rescue 814 and Ambulance 852 responded to the scene. Crews obtained access to the structure and found no hazard present.

At approximately 11:45 hours, Company 8 and Truck 216 were dispatched to the 200 block of Whitman Ave. for a working trailer fire. Ambulance 852 arrived on scene to find flames through the roof. 810 arrived on scene and deployed two hand lines to knock down the bulk of the fire. 818 arrived on scene to assist 810's crew with the efforts. Crews from Bellefonte assisted Company 8 with overhaul efforts. Crews worked on scene for approximately 3 hours and were placed available at approximately 14:40 hours.

Mutual Aid to Companies 1 & 2: 3-March-2007, 05:55 hours
At approximately 05:55 hours, Tanker 819 was dispatched to a dwelling fire in Coleville. The incident was deemed to be a furnace malfunction, and Tanker 819 was cancelled en route to the scene.

At approximately 22:55 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 100 block of Norman Avenue for a specialized rescue. Ambulance 851, Engine-Rescue 814 and Rescue 818 responded to the scene. Ambulance 851's crew and Station 8 personnel responding directly to the scene assisted with the extrication, and Engine-Rescue 814 and Rescue 818 were cancelled en route. Company 8 was placed available at approximately 23:05 hours.

MVA, 23-February-2007, 13:50 hours
At approximately 13:50 hours, Company 8 was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident: car into a tractor-trailer. Rescue 818 and Ambulances 851 and 852 responded to the scene and reported no entrapment, but one patient in the automobile. The patient was removed and was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center by Ambulance 852. Company 8 was placed available at approximately 14:40 hours.

Inside Investigation, 22-February-07, 06:22 hours
At approximately 06:22 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to CPI, Harrison Road, for an inside investigation. Engine 810 and Rescue 818 responded to the scene, and crews determined that a fire alarm had malfunctioned. The company returned to service at approximately 07:00 hours.

Medical Assist, 19-February-07, 21:00 hours
At approximately 21:00 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to The Oaks, 300 Rachel Drive, to assist with a cardiac arrest. Rescue 818 responded to the scene. Ambulance 851 transported the patient to Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Mutual Aid to Company 5, 19-February-07, 14:15 hours
At approximately 14:15 hours, 810 was dispatched to assist Company 5 with a trailer fire in the area of the 1400 block of the Benner Pike. Shortly after 810 responded, 818 was dispatched to the call. 810's crew knocked down the fire and crews from all responsing companies continued with overhaul. Crews operated on scene until 16:05 hours.

At approximately 15:15 hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 200 block of Steeplechase Drive for a CO alarm activation. Ambulance 8 and Engine-Rescue 814 responded to the call. Company 8 used a multi-gas meter; nothing was found.

Flue Fire, 10-February-07, 08:05 hours
At approximately 08:05 hours, Engine 810 was dispatched to a flue fire on South Main Street. The Company was cancelled before arrival and returned to quarters.

RIT Assignment, 4-February-07
At approximately 11:46 hours, 814 was dispatched Boggs Township for a RIT assignment. 814 responded with a crew of 8. Upon arrival, the fire was knocked down. 814 was then transferred to Station 9 for a standby assignment, and arrived back to quarters at approximately 13:30 hours.
At approximately 15:55 hours, Company 8, Ambulance 8
and Medic 24 were dispatched
to the intersection of College Ave. and Norman Ave. for a motor vehicle
accident with injuries. Chief 801 responded to the scene to find
two vehicles involved, and held the EMS response to Ambulance 851.

At approx 02:45 hours Company 8, Ambulance 8 and Medic 24 were
dispatched for a vehicle accident on the 300 block of S. Main Street. Chief
800 responded to the scene and was advised by Centre County
Communications that there was a vehicle into a house with two patients
out of the vehicle. Chief 800 arrived on scene shortly thereafter to
find a vehicle overturned on the front porch of the house, and that both
occupants had left the scene on foot. Pennsylvania State Police caught up with one occupant a
short time later while he was walking away from the scene and determined that
he was not the driver. Pleasant Gap crews checked the vehicle for
hazards and checked the house for structural damage. Units were on
scene until approx 04:00 hours.

At approx 09:10 hours, units were alerted for a specialized rescue
for a person trapped under a car. Rescue 818 and Ambulance 851
responded on the call. Spring Twp Police arrived on scene and advised
there was an elderly female patient in cardiac arrest under a passenger
car. Ambulance 851 arrived and the scene and advised Centre County
Communication that the Coroner was needed to the scene. After the
Police and Coroner finished the investigation, the Rescue crew used
airbags to lift the car so the victim could be removed. Units operated
on scene until approx 10:30 hours.

At approximately 20:30
hours, Company 8 was dispatched to the 900 block of East College Avenue
for a vehicle into an embankment with unknown injuries.
Engine-Rescue 814, Rescue 818, and Ambulance 852 responded to the
scene. 800 arrived on scene to find one vehicle off the roadway
with no injuries, and placed Engine-Rescue 814 and Ambulance 852
available. 818 operated on scene for approximately one hour.

At 13:30 hours, Companies 8, Engine 111 and Truck 217 were dispatched
to a building fire at the Happy Valley Blend Plant on Axemann Road in
Pleasant Gap. Upon arrival, Chief 800 found that a 480V, 3-phase
electrical junction box had shorted, and held units responding to
Company 8. Engine 810, Rescue 818, Tanker 819 and Ambulance 852
operated on scene for approximately 1 hour.

Building Fire, 1-January-2007, 02:00 hours
At 00:30 hours, units from
Milesburg and Howard were dispatched to 604 Old 220 Road for reports of
a building fire. 900 arrived on scene and advised a working
fire in an abandoned building, and that it would be an
exterior attack only. Approximately 30 minutes into the
incident, 814 was dispatched for RIT.
Shortly after 814 arrived on scene, Command was advised of a barn fire
in Milesburg's first due area. 900 requested 814 to respond
on the second incident, as well as units from Snow Shoe, Milesburg,
Bellefonte, Clinton County, and Tanker 819 from Pleasant Gap.
At 02:00 hours, 291 arrived on scene and advised that the barn was on
the ground, and advised that setup of a water supply was needed.
814 was the first unit on the scene and 800 assumed command
due to the fact that Milesburg had no officers on scene.
Units operated on scene until approximately 04:00 hours.

Church Fire, 1-January 2007, 02:25 hours
Units
were dispatched for a fire investigation outside in the area of Howard
Nursery. 1402 arrived on scene and advised a working church
fire and upgraded the response to a building fire, which brought Rescue
818 and Tanker 819 from the above barn fire.
Upon arrival of the rescue, crews set up portable lighting around the
structure and assisted with hand-lines. After the fire was
knocked down, 818 remained on scene to assist units from Lock Haven,
Howard, and Beech Creek with overhaul. 818 and 819 were
placed available at approximately 08:00 hours.
